IBM Plans to Acquire Merge Healthcare Tech for $1B


acquisition,  mergerTYSONS CORNER, VA August 10, 2015 — IBM (NYSE: IBM) is looking to strengthen Watson’s image analytics and cognitive abilities with a planned purchase of Merge Healthcare (Nasdaq: MRGE), maker of medical imaging and clinical systems based in Chicago, ExecutiveBiz reported Friday.

IBM said Thursday it expects the $1 billion transaction to build the Watson Health Cloud’s ability to derive new insights from images sourced from various devices, databases and other resources.

Healthcare will be one of IBM’s biggest growth areas over the next 10 years, ” said John Kelly, senior vice president of IBM Research and Solutions Portfolio.
