TYSONS CORNER, VA August 10, 2015 — IBM (NYSE: IBM) is looking to strengthen Watson’s image analytics and cognitive abilities with a planned purchase of Merge Healthcare (Nasdaq: MRGE), maker of medical imaging and clinical systems based in Chicago, ExecutiveBiz reported Friday.
IBM said Thursday it expects the $1 billion transaction to build the Watson Health Cloud’s ability to derive new insights from images sourced from various devices, databases and other resources.
Healthcare will be one of IBM’s biggest growth areas over the next 10 years, ” said John Kelly, senior vice president of IBM Research and Solutions Portfolio.
“Watson’s powerful cognitive and analytic capabilities, coupled with those from Merge and our other major strategic acquisitions, position IBM to partner with healthcare providers, research institutions, biomedical companies, insurers and other organizations committed to changing the very nature of health and healthcare in the 21st century.”
