South Korea Selects Airbus Tanker Jet for Military Aircraft Refueling

airbus logoSouth Korea has ordered four aerial refueling tanker jets from Europe-based aircraft manufacturer Airbus, adding to the company’s portfolio of international customers, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Jeyup Kwaak and Robert Wall write that other buyers of Airbus’ A330 MRTT or multirole tanker transport include Australia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the U.K. and the United Arab Emirates.

“This contract will also allow Airbus Defense and Space to establish a long-term and sustainable cooperation with the Korean industry, ” a spokesperson for the company said.

According to the report, delivery of the A330 MRTT will begin in 2019.

Kwaak and Wall report that France, India and a consortium of European military forces are also future potential Airbus customers for the refueling tanker, which is a converted Airbus A330 passenger plane.

The report said European plane makers such as Airbus could have an advantage in international sales over U.S. counterparts such as Boeing (NYSE: BA), which builds the KC-46A Pegasus tanker, due to the current performance of the euro.
