General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) is set to kick off production of vehicle-based network communication nodes under a $219 million order from the U.S. Army.

Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics mission systems, said Wednesday the company’s engineering teams would upgrade technology and human-factors design in collaboration with the Army as full-rate production starts.

General Dynamics will perform the first full rate production for Warfighter Information Network – Tactical Increment 2 systems at its Taunton, Massachusetts-based facility.

WIN-T serves as the Army’s communications backbone for commanders and soldiers.

The system is embedded in mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles and Stryker vehicles.
