David Melcher,  formerly CEO of defense technology manufacturer Exelis, will join the Aerospace Industries Association trade group as president and CEO on June 8, the AIA said Thursday.

Melcher led McLean, Va.-based Exelis through its October 2011 spinoff from ITT Corp. (NYSE: ITT) into an independent company and May 2015 sale to Harris Corp. (NYSE: HRS) for $4.75 billion in cash and stock.

He succeeds Marion Blakey, the former Federal Aviation Administration leader who held the CEO role at AIA for seven years before she joined Rolls-Royce in February as chief executive of the engine maker’s business in North America.

Melcher served as a member of AIA’s executive and finance committees during his tenure at Exelis and previously led ITT’s defense and information solutions segment, the business organization that later became Exelis.
