Boeing (NYSE: BA) has won a $29.5 million contract to build a beam control system for integration into the U.S. Navy ships’ laser weapons.

The company will design and develop a prototype high power beam control subsystem with a configuration compatible with high energy lasers based on solid-state laser technology, Boeing said Tuesday.

The beam control system will work to focus and hold a laser on a moving target to disable the object.

Peggy Morse, vice president of Boeing’s directed energy and strategic systems unit, said the company leveraged its beam control and directed energy technologies to develop laser weapon system configurations for the Navy’s maritime operation.

Boeing said the beam control system builds on the company’s recently demonstrated high energy laser mobile demonstrator for the U.S. Army.

The system will also be compatible with other systems being developed by other vendors for the Office of Naval Research’s solid state laser technology maturation program.
