The Japanese government intends to buy Northrop Grumman-built (NYSE: NOC) E-2D Hawkeye and RQ-4 Global Hawk aircraft through a foreign military sales program run by the U.S. Defense Department.

Northrop said Sunday the Japanese defense ministry chose the two aircraft platforms to support the agency’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations.

“We are very pleased the Japan Ministry of Defense has expressed confidence in these systems and look forward to working with our U.S. military customers through the FMS process, ” said Mary Petryszyn, vice president of international operations at Northrop’s aerospace systems business unit.

The E-2D airborne warning and control system aircraft is designed to provide warfighters with a long-range coverage area for detecting aerial threats, while the RQ-4 unmanned aircraft system is built to perform wide-area surveillance for more than 30 flight hours.
