Lockheed Wins $914M Air Force ‘Space Fence’ Radar Production Contract

SpaceFenceLockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has won a $914, 699, 474 contract to build a ground-based surveillance radar for the U.S. Air Force to track and detect objects in space.

The Air Force is obligating $415 million in fiscal year 2013 and 2014 research, development, test and evaluation funds for the “Space Fence” program and has given Lockheed 52 months to reach initial operating capability, the Defense Department said Monday.

Lockheed will install Space Fence on Kwajalein Island in the Republic of the Marshall Islands for the Air Force to follow commercial and military satellites, depleted space boosters and space debris.

Gen. William Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command, said in August 2013 that the branch aims to gain a “quantum leap forward in space situational awareness for the nation” by combining the Space Fence with the Joint Space Operations Center’s high-performance computing environment.

Through the Space Fence program, the Air Force intends to replace a setup of three transmitters and six receivers in the southern U.S. that have been in operation since 1961.
