Kris Osborn writes that Eric Single, Air Force chief of the Global Strike division, said the service’s B-2 fleet will be upgraded to feature new radar warning and communication receivers, avionics, and digital nuclear munitions.
The branch awarded Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) a $9.9 billion contract to modernize and maintain the bombers, according to DoD Buzz.
Northrop built the B-2 to carry up to 40, 000 pounds of payload and fly at a maximum altitude of 50, 000 feet, according to Osborn’s article.
Osborn reports the Air Force wants the aircraft’s communications system to have a satellite connectivity platform and a very-low-frequency waveform technology for aircrews receive targeting instructions.
The redesigned B-2 will also contain a new flight management control processor, long-range standoff and guided missiles, B-61 Mod weapons and a defense management system for detecting threats into the aircraft, Osborn writes.
