NASA: Names 5 Winners, 1 Fan Favorite in Int’l Space Apps Challenge


mobile-tablet-device-mobilityNASA has announced the winners and the voted fan favorite in the 2014 International Space Apps Challenge that saw approximately 8, 000 participants offer hardware, mobile or Web and data visualizations applications.

The space agency said Friday that it launched the competition to generate direct applications of technology to space missions.

Alert-Alert, PhoneSat, Space Wearables, Earth as Art and My Sky Color were the challenge categories and the agency collected votes for the People’s Choice Award winner via social media.

Space Apps Toronto’s SkyWatch won the Alert-Alert category as the agency cited its “best use of data” distinction and the app creates a visual representation of space data from observatories.

The agency chose Space Apps London’s Android Base Station for the PhoneSat challenge as that team built an app that works to use smartphone as a satellite-connected Wi-Fi hotspot.

For the Space Wearable challenges,  Space Apps Exeter’s Aurora Wearables won the mission concept distinction for using an Internet-connected spacesuit.

Space Apps Kansas City’s Yorbit was named most inspiring in the Earth as Art challenge for the app’s satellite imagery search, personalization and sharing features.

The agency cited Space Apps London’s SkySnapper as having the “greatest galactic impact” for the app’s work to measure air quality by photo capturing photos.

Space Apps Valencia’s Space Helmet was voted fan favorite based on number of relevant tweets, timeline deliveries and unique users.
