Mike Gibbons, program manager for Boeing‘s (NYSE: BA) lines of F/A-18 fighter jets and EA-18G electronic attack planes, said his firm is “very close” to finalizing a multi-billion dollar contract with the U.S. Navy for 47 total aircraft,  Reuters reported Monday.

Andrea Shalal quotes Gibbons as saying the contract will include planes funded in fiscal years 2013 and 2014 and include 12 planes for the government of Australia.

Last year, Australia asked to buy 24 of the EA-18G Growler planes as part of a proposed $3.7 billion foreign military sales agreement.

The Pentagon said at the time that Australia wanted to use the planes for current and future coalition missions and for homeland defense against regional threats.
