Donna Harris: 1776-MedStar Partnership Aims to Foster Medtech Startup Growth

healthcare-systemBusiness incubator 1776 and MedStar Health have partnered to help startups pilot their medical technology products and attract potential customers, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Steven Overly writes that the alliance also seeks to connect healthcare innovators with MedStar’s local network of hospitals.

Washington-based 1776 has also forged a similar partnership with Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH).

“If we could get Booz Allen and MedStar in and providing their expertise and connections to these start-ups, it can tremendously help these start-ups to grow in particular industries that are native to D.C., ” said Donna Harris, co-founder of 1776.

Several MedStar staff will conduct seminars at 1776 on topics such as hospital management, telemedicine and electronic health records system.

“If health care is going to innovate, it cannot only look inside. It has to look outside, ” said Mark Smith, head of the MedStar Institute of Innovation, according to Overly’s article.

“For start-ups that want to go into that space, we can sort of give them a reality check, ” Smith added, Overly reports.

MedStar’s Institute for Innovation solicits ideas from hospital personnel and aims to promote innovations in surgery and therapeutic medicine, according to The Post.
