Report: Microsoft Interested in Acquiring Mobile Startup Xamarin

acquisitionMicrosoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is finalizing discussions with mobile startup business Xamarin in a move that could result in a potential acquisition of the company, CRN reported Monday.

Kevin McLaughlin writes Microsoft developers will be able to code mobile applications on the iOS and Android platforms if a major deal comes through.

Acquiring the San Francisco, Calif.-based company is expected to help Microsoft grow the number of apps on its app store and in the Windows Azure service, according to the report.

Microsoft and Xamarin recently partnered to help developers build iOS and Android mobile apps using Visual Studio tools, CRN reports.

McLaughlin writes Xamarin’s tools have been combined with Microsoft’s development resources and made available through the Microsoft development network under that agreement.
