Jeffrey Palombo: Northrop Radar Designed to Help Marines Detect, Engage Targets

northrop Grumman_BLUENorthrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) will enter the low-rate initial production phase on ground and air task-oriented radars for U.S. Marine Corps troops to monitor and engage targets.

The Navy’s assistant secretary for research development and acquisition approved the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar program production at a Defense Department event on Jan. 24, Northrop said Monday.

Jeffrey Palombo, vice president and general manager of Northrop’s land and self protection systems division, said radar system is intended to help meet ground and ship-based radar mission requirements.

The system went through developmental testing at the Wallops Island, Va.-based Surface Combat Systems Center and the Yuma, Ariz.-based Marine Corps Air Station.

Northrop has also demonstrated the AN/TPS-80 system’s ballistic missile defense technology for multiple rocket detection.
