Robert Mueller, director of the FBI for 12 years prior to his retirement in September 2013, has joined international law firm WilmerHale as a partner.

Mueller, who held second-longest tenure as director in the FBI’s history, will spend time in the firm’s West Coast offices as he currently holds a teaching appointment at Stanford University, WilmerHale said Monday.

The 35-year law enforcement and government service veteran also serves as an executive-in-residence at Georgetown University.

“Bob was the director who managed the transition of the FBI into an agency that dealt not only with the hardest criminal justice matters but also with the most challenging national security issues, including cyber-security threats, ” said Robert Novick, a Wilmerhale co-managing partner.

Between 1993 and 1995, Mueller served as a partner at Hale and Dorr LLP prior to that firm’s combination with Wilmer Cutler Pickering LLP.

His public service career includes time as a Marine Corps officer, federal prosecutor and assistant attorney general for the Justice Department‘s criminal division.
