Bechtel Unit Awarded $7B for Navy Nuclear Propulsion Parts

BechtelA Bechtel business unit has been awarded a $7, 069, 265, 220 contract modification to produce nuclear propulsion technology for the U.S. Navy at national laboratories run by the Navy and Energy Department.

Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corp. will receive $82, 893, 000 in contract funds at the time of award from the Navy under the fiscal year 2014 operations and maintenance and other procurement items, the Defense Department said Tuesday.

The unit will perform work at the Bettis & Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, which has sites in Pittsburgh, Idaho Falls, Idaho and Charleston, S.C.

Bettis says it works to provide the Navy technical services during construction, maintenance and refueling of surface ships and submarines.

Enlisted and officer propulsion plant operators train at the Charleston facility and the Idaho Falls site hosts a reactor core.
