Northrop to Help Coast Guard Update Polar Ice Breakers; Bill Hannon Comments

northrop Grumman_BLUENorthrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has won a five-year, $5 million contract to update and maintain software and navigation systems for two U.S. Coast Guard polar ice breakers.

The company will assemble navigation hardware for the Polar Star and Healy and also provide crew training and technical assistance to the Coast Guard, Northrop said Thursday.

Bill Hannon, vice president of Northrop’s maritime systems division, said the company has helped the Coast Guard maintain navigation systems on polar ice breakers for 14 years.

Before the ice breakers are deployed, Northrop will assemble integrated bridge system hardware, replace components and update software in Charlottesville, Va.

Installation and field assessment will occur on the Polar Star this month, while work on the Healy will be done during next year’s summer season.
