IBM (NYSE: IBM) has won a five-year, $30 million contract to build a cloud-based platform for the U.S. General Services Administration to use for processing orders from federal, civilian and military clients.

The company will work with GSA to develop and implement the system in order to monitor supplier reports, identify trends and analyze order patterns, the company said Monday.

Anne Altman, general manager of IBM’s U.S. federal business, said the company intends for its SmartCloud technology to help government users gain insights from big data.

GSA aims for the project to leverage the IBM Smarter Commerce portfolio of cloud-based software and services.

The agency also wants the platforms to increase its visibility into global supply chains and business-to-business processes with the goal of simplifying cross-channel online procurements.
