IBMIBM (NYSE: IBM) has opened a cloud computing center in Washington that will work to help federal agency and public sector customers adopt cloud environments.

The Federal Cloud Innovation Center is built to house more than 500 on-site professionals and more than 37, 000 cloud experts worldwide who will collaborate with agencies to develop open standards for enterprise-wide cloud computing, IBM said Tuesday.

Jane Snowdon, IBM chief federal innovation officer and a former IBM Research executive, will lead the center.

John Kelly III, IBM senior vice president and director of IBM Research, said the company aims to further develop cloud technologies through access to IBM’s research labs through the center.

Company personnel and customers will work on new security technologies such as encryption tools that are intended to help secure sensitive data stored in the cloud.
