National Archives to Solicit Digital Records Technology

NARA logoThe National Archives and Records Administration is soliciting ideas from vendors on a plan to convert federal records into electronic formats, Nextgov reported Monday.

Joseph Marks writes a presidential directive mandates that government agencies automate emails by 2016 and implement a digital record-keeping system by 2019.

NARA asked vendors in a notice to host webinars for members of the federal information management community on technology for records management and issues regarding freedom of information law compliance.

Ninety-five percent of agencies do not comply with statutory requirements for managing digital records, according to Nextgov.

All agencies are supposed to store permanent copies of records that may be useful to future historians but aren’t required to turn those records over to the NARAs for 30 years.

Marks reports the Archives also wants to use e-discovery tools to help organizations better document legal cases and will discuss those plans with vendors at an industry event in September.
