Under the combat network communications technology contract, Boeing will provide tools and spare parts to upgrade and maintain the B-52 bombers at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, according to a company statement.
Scheduled to begin in late 2014, the improvements aim to help the USAF crew members change tasks and re-target weapons during flight, as well as share information with ground forces.
Currently, aircrews upload mission details to the B-52 bomber before a flight.
The upgrade will also add computing network with workstations to every crew post and a centralized digital interphone with noise-cancelling feature to enable aircrews to communicate on headsets.
