Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has won a contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop concepts for measuring soil moisture and ocean surface vector winds by using a microwave instrument.
The Defense Department is requiring the ideas for microwave sounding and imaging technology to be used for future weather satellites, Ball Aerospace said Friday.
Tim Harris, vice president and general manager of the company’s national defense business unit, said the company is aiming to help the Air Force build a space-based environmental sensing system.
Ball Aerospace built a similar microwave imaging instrument for NASA to measure global precipitation, the company said.
The company also built a satellite bus and an instrument to map ozone for the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite.
