VA Picking Up To Three Small Firms For $5B IT Products Award

ITphotoThe Department of Veterans Affairs plans to award up to three companies positions on a potential $5 billion contract for information technology products, the Washington Post reports.

For this award, Kathleen Miller writes the VA will reserve prime positions for companies that have up to 150 employees on staff.

Jo Schuda, a VA spokeswoman, told the Post in an email the agency will select at least one service-disabled, veteran-owned small business as a prime contractor.

According to the Post, this project is drawing particular interest as the VA’s funding is immune to automatic budget cuts under sequestration and is also set to increase.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) are listed on a government website as expressing interest in the VA project and Miller writes larger firms will have to partner with the smaller primes in order to win work on the contract.

A 2011 industry day for the project attracted 100 companies, Miller writes.
