The U.S. Army has awarded five companies positions on a potential $248 million contract for portable hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicles.

A FedBizOpps contracting notice says awardees will bid to provide the branch UAV products for operations inside and outside the continental U.S.

Awardees of the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity include:

  • AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV)
  • Altavian
  • Elbit Systems of America
  • Innovative Automation Technologies
  • Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT)

The notice says the Army is seeking systems to transmit live airborne video images, compass headings and location information to a ground control station and a laptop computer.

According to FlightGlobal, AeroVironment is eligible to offer its RQ-11 Raven and RQ-20 Puma.

The Army has not issued requirements for the contract yet, FlightGlobal reports.
