Lloyd Newton

Retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Lloyd “Fig” Newton has been elected to L-3 Communications‘ (NYSE: LLL) board of directors, the company announced Tuesday.

Newton becomes the board’s 10th member, with nine serving as independent directors.

The 34-year military veteran also brings corporate experience and industry knowledge to the board, said Michael  Strianese, L-3’s chairman, president and CEO.

After retiring from the Air Force in 2000, he served as executive vice president for Pratt & Whitney’s military engines unit until 2006.

From 1997 until retirement, he served as commander of the Air Education and Training Command, where he held responsibility for the recruiting, training and education of Air Force personnel.

At the time, the command included 13 bases, more than 43, 000 active duty personnel and 14, 000 civilians.

He has also served as an Air Force congressional liaison officer with House and holds several awards and decorations, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and a Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster.

Newton served in the Air Force’s Thunderbird squadron for air demonstration and flew nearly 4, 000 hours as a combat aviator.

Peter Chiarelli, a retired four-star Army general and former vice chief of staff, recently joined the board at Harris Corp. (NYSE: HRS)
