Dell Declares First-Ever Cash Dividend; Brian Gladden Comments

Dell‘s (NASDAQ: DELL) board of directors has approved the first cash dividend payable to shareholders in its history, the company announced Friday.

Shareholders will receive a quarterly cash dividend of 8 cents per common share, payable to shareholders of record as of the close of business on Oct. 1, 2012.

Chief Financial Officer Brian Gladden said this payment is part of a capital allocation strategy including a share-repurchase program, research and development investments, capital expenditures and acquisitions.

The company announced in July it is acquiring the California-based firm Quest Software for $2.4 billion, or $28 per share, looking to bolster Dell’s intellectual property portfolio.

Dell estimates its software business is worth $1.2 billion based on annual revenue.
