General Dynamics Subsidiary Wins $117M For Sub R&D

General Dynamics’ (NYSE: GD) Electric Boat subsidiary has won a $117, 816, 391 contract modification to help the U.S. Navy research and develop new technologies for submarines.

The Defense Department said the subsidiary will provide engineering and technical design services to help advance current and future submarine platforms.

Studies will support platform design in areas of manufacturing, machinery systems, acoustics, ship control, logistics, materials, weapons handling storage and submarine safety.

The subsidiary will also help insert near-term technology for Virginia-class submarines and identify replacement technology options for Ohio-class submarines.

Seventy-five percent of the work will occur in Groton, Conn. and the rest of the work will occur in Newport News, Va.

The Pentagon expects work to finish by October 2013 and the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington is the contracting activity.

Electric Boat is also providing the Navy with propulsion units and other long-lead-time materials for construction of the SSN 792 Virginia class submarine.
