BAE To Sell Law Enforcement Armor Unit; Frank Pope Comments

Frank Pope, BAE Systems

BAE Systems has agreed to sell its law enforcement body armor unit, called Safariland,  to an acquisition vehicle affiliated with private investment firm Kanders & Company.

In an announcement Tuesday, the company said it expects the sale to close in either the second or third quarter of its 2012 fiscal year.

The move is part of a restructuring effort aimed at streamlining operations and aligning BAE’s business portfolio with its strategy, said Frank Pope, president of land and armaments.

In December, the company agreed to sell two businesses that make safety products for defense and aerospace customers to a Japanese manufacturer of seat belts, air bags and child seats.

BAE acquired the Ontario-Calif.-based firm in July 2007, which helped form the products group.

Safariland has 1, 700 employees based in Ontario; Jacksonville, Florida; Pittsfield, Mass.; Casper, Wyo.; and Tijuana, Mexico.
