IBM Adding Navigation Software Firm Vivisimo to Big Data Portfolio

IBM (NYSE: IBM) has agreed to acquire Pittsburgh-based discovery navigation software provider Vivisimo for an undisclosed amount, the company announced Wednesday.

Vivisimo has more than 140 customers in both the public and private sectors, including the U.S. Air Force, Navy Social Security Administration and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

IBM will integrate nearly 120 Vivisimo employees into its software group and will incorporate acquired technology into its big data platform.

IBM recently won $502 million to provide computing technology and services for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The company will provide NOAA with a primary back-up data center, systems administration, application support and program management.
