IBM Announces $502M Weather Supercomputer IDIQ Win

IBM (NYSE: IBM) has won a $502 million contract to continue providing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with computing technology and services.

NOAA announced it would award IBM the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract on Nov. 29, 2011.

IBM said Wednesday it will support the government agency’s operational weather and climate supercomputers through 2016.

The competitively procured contract could potentially expand IBM’s relationship with NOAA through 2021, the company said.

IBM said will provide NOAA with managed services including a primary back-up data center, systems administration, application support and program management.

The system resulting from the contractual agreement will provide NOAA weather, ocean, space and climate information.

IBM said NOAA will use the system to conduct weather and climate modeling by analyzing big data in order to provide reports and daily weather forecasts.
