BAE Forms Team to Pursue Potential $2B Army Plant Contract

BAE Systems and Olin Corp.’s Winchester ammunition division have formed a joint venture to pursue a contract to manage and operate a U.S. Army ammunition plant, the companies announced Monday.

U.S. Munitions LLC will submit a proposal for the contract, which the joint venture said could award more than $2 billion in sales over 10 years.

The Army’s ammunition plant is in Independence, Miss. and specializes in small-caliber ammunition. The companies said the plant also serves as a regional test center for ammunition and weapons.

According to the companies, the Army is expected to make a final decision by October 2012. Work is expected to begin by Oct. 1, 2013 following a one-year transition period.
