Raytheon to Provide First Air Force Transmitter Upgrade in Two Decades

Raytheon Co. (NYSE: RTN) has won a $31.1 million VACM contract with the U.S. Air Force‘s cryptologic systems division to provide the first technological upgrade to its transmitter devices in two decades.

The multi-year agreement calls for Raytheon to design lighter, more power-efficient devices for secure transmissions of voice and data traffic.

Raytheon will initially design and test the cryptographic units before replacing current systems.

Raytheon will replace stand-alone cryptographic units with more affordable, modern products making use of data-scrambling algorithms to encrypt information on one end and decrypt it on the other.

“Our new units have the same connectors and form factors as the old ones, maintaining compatibility with the legacy installations, ” said Jeff Miller, director of tactical communication systems for Raytheon’s network centric systems business.

“Securing our nation’s secrets while fostering communication is paramount to victory on any battlefield, and this is exactly what Raytheon is delivering, ” he added.
