Lockheed, Boeing to Help NASA Prepare for Deep Space Exploration

NASA has selected Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) to develop space storage and transfer concepts important to the agency’s future deep space human exploration missions.

Storing cryogenic propellants such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen in space for long periods of time is crucial for this exploration.

The mission concept studies will identify technology gaps and look at innovative technical solutions to develop cryogenic propulsion systems and depots.

Each company will win up to $600, 000 on an approximately $2.4 million contract for the work. NASA’s exploration technology development program is funding the studies.

The space technology office at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Oh. is managing the contracts.
