Alion to Support Design, Development of Laser-Based Aircraft Countermeasure System

Alion Science and Technology will support the design and development of U.S. Army aircraft countermeasure systems on a three-year contract with the aircraft survivability equipment project office.

The company will provide subject matter expertise to the advance threat infrared countermeasures system, which is undergoing an upgrade.

The company will analyze competing designs to assure system reliability and performance. Alion will also provide system testing, test failures and failure investigations recommendations.

The laser-based system is designed to be fully integrated with military aircraft equipment suites, which include passive missile warning and detection.

“Aircraft survivability equipment protects the people who safeguard our nation, ” said Chris Amos, Alion senior vice president and manager of the technology solutions group. “Improvements to these systems not only provide additional security for the warfighter but also offer pilots the ability to be autonomous. Aircrews do not have to divert their attention from their primary mission to counter a man-portable air defense system or other missile threat.”
