Joint Javelin Venture Receives Contract from UK

The UK Ministry of Defense has awarded the Joint Javelin Venture, a partnership of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, a contract to provide over 1, 300 Javelin missile rounds and technical support. The contract is worth $176 million and will run from 2010 to 2012.

Duane Gooden, program director for Raytheon’s Javelin program and president of the Javelin Joint Venture, said “The current battlefield requires precision at all levels of the fight, and Javelin meets the need for precision at both the platoon and squad levels. Javelin is the weapon of choice for infantry, special operations and rapid reaction forces due to its unmatched lethality, versatility and gunner survivability.”

Barry James, program director for Lockheed Martin’s Javelin program and VP of the Javelin Joint Venture, pointed out the capabilities of the Javelin system saying “Because the Javelin automatically guides itself to the target after launch, the missile system allows the gunner to either take cover to avoid counterfire or engage another threat.”
