Contract Award – Lockheed Martin – $1 billion- DoD’s Missle Defence Agency

On Monday, Lockheed Martin announced it had been awarded a $1 billion dollar contract for continued development of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence Weapon System, a warship-based missile defense system.

There are currently 21 of the systems in existence, designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles in many different circumstances and battlegrounds. Nineteen are on US warships, and two are installed on Japanese Maritime Defense Force ships.
Lockheed Martin’s Surface-Sea Based Missile Defense division, headquartered in Moorestown, N.J., will design, develop, integrate, test, deliver and install additional Aegis BMD capability for the U.S. and allied navies.

The contract will focus on the continued development of the system for deployment to a greater variety of ships, as well as continued development of the system’s accuracy and reliability.
