Serco Group PLC has signed a new contract valued at around A$370 million, or US$300 million, with the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship to transform its immigration detention centers across the country. The 5-year contract has a total of four years in optional extensions, and Serco will begin to take over from the extant service provider in July, completing the transition by November.
Serco will manage and operate seven adult immigration detention centers and provide national and international transport and escort services for detainees. Serco will focus on the well-being of detainees through standard of living improvements and English language education programs and streamline operation of detention centers.
