The U.S. Navy has awarded Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) a $3.3 billion contract for detail design and construction work and a $941.2 million modification for additional labor for the future USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier.

The Defense Department said Friday the contracts cover material and services to complete the ship including research studies, engineering, materials procurement, life-cycle support and logistics.

HII will perform contract work in Newport News, Virginia through June 2022.

The obligated$188 million amount for the design and construction contract is from the Navy’s shipbuilding and conversion funds for fiscal years 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015 and research, development, test and evaluation funds for fiscal 2015, DoD said.

DoD added that the $350.8 million obligated amount for the contract modification on labor is from fiscal 2015 shipbuilding and conversion funds.

The Naval Sea Systems Command at Washington Navy Yard is the contracting activity.
