Report: Air Force Plans $4B Global Hawk Modernization Contract for Northrop

Global HawkNorthrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) could receive around $4 billion in contract funds to perform upgrade and sustainment work on the U.S. Air Force‘s RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems, Flightglobal reported Tuesday.

Citing a FedBizOpps notice,  James Drew writes the Air Force plans to award the Global Hawk modernization project to Northrop on a sole-source basis over the next five years.

Congress restored funds for the program in fiscal 2015 and Northrop has obtained Milestone C approval from the Pentagon for the surveillance drone, according to the publication.

The Air Force wants to modernize the ground control, communication, engine, weather sensor and anti-icing systems of its RQ-4 drones, the report said.air-force-tile-ad

The military service could also ask Northrop to upgrade the aircraft’s payload system to allow it to carry instruments like optical bar camera and electro-optical reconnaissance technologies.
