Defense News: General Dynamics Ends Prime Role on Air Force T-X Trainer Program Pursuit


T_38General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) has decided to abandon the company’s pursuit for the U.S. Air Force’s T-X trainer replacement program as a prime contractor, Defense News reported Thursday.

The company told the publication it made the decision after the information systems and technology group’s reorganization, which completed in January.

Alenia Aermacchi originally partnered with General Dynamics to propose a variant of the Italian aerospace manufacturer’s M-346 aircraft and the future of Alenia’s participation in the program is not clear, according to Aaron Mehta’s report.

Defense News lists these other teams as still in the running for the trainer program:

  • Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Saab
  • Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Korean Aerospace Industries
  • Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC),  BAE Systems and L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL)
  • Textron AirLand

The Air Force to build 350 trainers as a replacement for the legacy T-38 fleet through the T-X program, according to the report.
