Stephen Spengler, formerly president and chief commercial officer at satellite services contractor Intelsat (NYSE: I), has been promoted to deputy CEO and will transition into the chief executive role on April 1, 2015.

Intelsat said Thursday the move is part of a succession plan that will see current Chairman and CEO David McGlade move into the executive chairman role at that time, which will mark 10 years of his tenure as the company’s chief executive.

Spengler, an 11-year Intelsat veteran, takes the deputy CEO role immediately.

“(Spengler’s) vision has been instrumental in driving our next generation strategy, and in building new innovative services with the commercial satellite services we provide, ” McGlade said.

Splenger’s career at Intelsat includes time as executive vice president of sales, marketing and strategy; and senior VP of sales in the Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific regions.

He oversaw the development of the company’s Intelsat EpicNG satellite platform and its first satellite is scheduled to launch in late 2015, Intelsat says.

His executive roles prior to Intelsat include SVP of global sales for broadband networks at Cirronet, VP of sales and marketing at ViaSat Satellite Networks and regional sales director for EMA satellite networks at Scientific-Atlanta Europe.
