VA Plans 5-Year HF Emergency Comms Network Contract

wireless communicationsThe Department of Veterans Affairs is looking to build a high-frequency radio system for VA medical facilities to transmit and receive information in the event of an emergency.

VA said Tuesday it plans to issue a five-year, firm-fixed-price contract for technology, installation, assessment, certification and training services to support the Emergency High-Frequency Radio Network.

The agency wants the infrastructure to have 400-watt “backbone” terminals and to facilitate two-way communications between 125-watt fixed and mobile stations across 200 VA hospitals nationwide.

According to VA, the system must be able to connect with other data transmission, cellular, IP and public switched telephone networks.

A formal solicitation for the HF emergency radio network project could be published by Oct. 31.
