Helicopter RadarThe U.S. Army has selected Bell Helicopter and a team of Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Sikorsky to build demonstrator rotorcraft prototypes under phase one of the branch’s Joint Multi Role technology demonstration program, Aviation Week reported Tuesday.

Amy Butler and Graham Warwick report the program is a precursor to the Army’s planned Future Vertical Lift Medium (FVL-M) program to acquire a new helicopter starting in the mid-2030s.

Boeing and Sikorsky announced Monday that they would build a SB.1 Defiant rigid coaxial-rotor compound helicopter for the program’s first phase.

Aviation Week reports that Bell Helicopter will construct a V-280 Valor tiltrotor for its part in the first phase.
