healthcare-systemIBM (NYSE: IBM) and medical information technology firm Epic have teamed up to pursue a Defense Department contract to modernize IT systems that are built to manage electronic health records of service members and their families.

The team plans to offer DoD a joint technology platform that will aim to address interoperability and security issues in the military health system, IBM said Tuesday.

“Improving quality of care and reductions to the overall costs for our military will be our primary goal, ” said Andy Maner, a managing partner at IBM US Federal.

“Together we understand that we must step forward and bring our best to improve health outcomes for those who proudly serve our nation, ” Maner added.

Epic maintains a portfolio of enterprise health IT platforms that work to support more than 20 billion transactions across third-party systems per year, according to IBM.
