Elon Musk Unveils SpaceX’s New Manned Transport Spacecraft

SpaceFenceSpace Exploration Technologies has introduced a manned spacecraft the company designed to carry astronauts to low-Earth orbit and the International Space Station, University Today reported Tuesday.

Ken Kremer writes Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO and founder, unveiled Dragon V2 on Thursday at the company’s Hawthorne, Calif.-based headquarters.

The spacecraft was launched from a SpaceX pad on the Florida Space Coast aboard a SpaceX-built Falcon rocket, according to the report.

Dragon V2, the manned version of SpaceX’s commercial unmanned resupply spacecraft, is built to transport cargos and seven crewmembers to the ISS, the report says.

Kremer writes the company is developing the Dragon “Space Taxi” with funding through NASA’s Commercial Crew Program as part of the U.S. government’s efforts to transport space crews to and from the ISS by 2017.
