DRS to Build South Korean Frigate Electric Drive System; Roger Sexauer Comments

DRS Technologies w-borderDRS Technologies Inc. has been awarded a more than $9 million contract with Hyosung Corp. to develop a hybrid electric drive propulsion system for the Republic of Korea Navy’s Incheon-class frigate.

DRS’s maritime and combat support systems group will work to design, build and test hybrid electric drive magnet motors for the FFX Batch II warship, DRS said Wednesday.

The ships are intended for coast patrol, anti-submarine warfare and transport support operations.

Roger Sexauer, president of the DRS maritime and combat support systems group, said the company intends for the contract win to extend its offerings into international markets.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is developing the first FFX-II ship, which is scheduled for delivery in 2015.

Fitchburg, Mass.-based DRS Power Technology Inc. designs the HED permanent magnet motors.
