Exelis to Repair and Modify Navy Minesweeper Systems; Dave Prater Comments

ExelisExelis (NYSE: XLS) has won a $13 million, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division to provide maintenance, repair and modification services to its two airborne mine countermeasure systems with the U.S. Navy.

The company said Monday it will work on the Airborne Mine Neutralization System and the MK-105 Minesweeping System, which the Navy has been using in mine detonating missions since 1972.

The minesweeping systems are expected to clear maritime area-denial challenges for naval forces in operating environments and for passage of commercial vessels.

“The MK-105 minesweeping system is an essential technology for the U.S. Navy’s mine countermeasure operations, ” said Dave Prater, vice president and general manager of Exelis’ radar, reconnaissance and undersea systems, noting the company is the original supplier of MK-105.

Work on the contract, which has a potential value of $53 million if all options are exercised, will be done in Panama City, Fla.

Exelis expects the project to be completed in December.
