Qualcomm Buys Several Thousand Granted and Pending Patents from HP

SmartphoneQualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) has purchased 1, 400 granted patents and pending patent applications in the U.S. from Hewlett-Packard for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase also includes 1, 000 granted patents and pending patent applications from other countries and covers technologies such as the Palm, IPAQ and Bitfone mobile operating systems, Qualcomm said Thursday.

Qualcomm intends for the acquisition to grow its mobile patent portfolio for existing and future licensees.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has chosen multiple research teams from the commercial and academic sectors to address microelectronics innovation challenges as part of an initiative worth up to $1.5 billion over five years.
