Army Picks 22 Solar Tech Contractors for $7B Program

PowerPlantThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has selected 22 contractors to compete for task order projects relating to solar technology under a $7 billion contract vehicle for renewable energy.

Both the Army and Defense Department will issue the task orders under the Renewable and Alternative Energy Power Production for DoD Installations program, through which DoD can purchase energy over up to 30 years under power purchasing agreements, the Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday.

Contractors are responsible for financing, designing, constructing, and maintaining renewable energy generation systems under the program.

Five companies won contracts in May under the program’s first round, which covers work to support geothermal energy installations (click here for a list of awardees).

The new round of winners for the solar technology portion includes:

Awardees for wind and biomass technologies will be announced by the end of the calendar year, the Army Corps of Engineers said.

John Lushetsky, executive director of the Army Energy Initiatives Task Force, said the multiple-award task order contracts are intended to help the branch meet its goal for having one gigawatt renewable energy by 2025.

Congress has mandated the Army produce and consume a quarter of its energy from renewable sources by 2025 and given other mandates related to installation energy security and sustainability.

The Defense Department aims to deploy three gigawatts of renewable energy from solar, wind, biomass or geothermal sources by 2025.
