GovCon Wire Watches SAIC as Company Prepares for Split

SAIC Logo_ExecutiveBizOne of the most significant developments in the GovCon sector of recent memory occurred in August 2012, when Science Applications International Corp. (NYSE: SAI) announced its intention to split into two independent, publicly-traded companies sometime in SAIC’s 2014 fiscal year.

The ramifications of the plan are still to be fully determined and some details still are being ironed out, but SAIC has already made decisions on who will lead the two companies after the split and their core areas of focus.

As Executive Mosaic‘s real-time avenue for industry news and information, GovCon Wire has followed the story every step of the way by covering the latest executive appointments and other key developments as SAIC undergoes a significant change.

SAIC unveiled additional details of what the two new companies will look like in February by announcing the names of both businesses and their chief executives.

Tony Moraco was appointed president of the company that will focus on enterprise information technology and technical services, which will keep the SAIC name.

John Jumper, SAIC’s CEO for nearly a year, will hold the same title and serve as chairman of Leidos, the business that will target the national security, health and engineering markets.

Stu Shea, SAIC chief operating officer, will move over to Leidos with Jumper and serve as its COO.

The executive ranks at Leidos continued to grow April and May when SAIC announced Robert Logan, director of engineering for information technology services, as CIO for Leidos.

One month later, Leidos gained another long-time GovCon leader when Lou Von Thaer joined the business as president of its national security sector.

Thaer came to Leidos from the General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems business unit, where he served as president since 2005.

John Thomas, former senior vice president and general manager of SAIC’s intelligence systems business unit, led the sector on an acting basis prior to Thaer’s appointment.

Thomas will head over to Leidos as executive VP of strategic development and will work to develop business strategies and find potential acquisitions, among other responsibilities.

SAIC brought in an experienced hand to handle its legal affairs as Mark Schultz, formerly a chief legal and risk officer at MWH Global, joined SAIC as general counsel for the technical services and information technology segment.

Schultz, a three-decade legal veteran, will then serve as EVP and general counsel of the company that will trade as SAIC.
