Lou Von Thaer, president of General Dynamics‘ (NYSE: GD) advanced information systems business unit since 2005, has joined Science Applications International Corp. (NYSE: SAI) as president of its national security sector.

The appointment is effective June 6 and Von Thaer will lead a business that will become part of Leidos, one of two independent companies SAIC is splitting into, SAIC said Tuesday.

He will oversee nearly 13,000 analysts, scientists, engineers and business professionals that work with customers on national security programs in areas such as cybersecurity.

As head of GDAIS, he has led more than 7,000 professionals that support mission systems integration, development and operations programs for customers in the defense, intelligence and homeland communities.

Von Thaer oversaw programs in areas such as cyber, maritime and ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance).

“The strength of SAIC today and the promise of future Leidos comes from the talent, expertise and perspectives of our employees – and that starts at the top,” said John Jumper, SAIC’s current and Leidos’ future chairman and CEO.

“I’m incredibly excited for Lou to join our company and add his talents to our leadership team,” Jumper said.

Prior to joining General Dynamics, he held senior management positions at Lucent Technologies‘ advanced technology systems division and at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Lucent’s predecessor.
